Tell Me About It:

The Fox Valley District Spring Camporee will draw far experiences from the life of Scouting’s founder, Lord Baden-Powell.  Early in his professional life, B-P served his country as a spy.  He recounted many of his adventures in his book, My Adventures as a Spy.  Among the more famous of his escapades had B-P posing as an eccentric butterfly collector.  When questioned by authorities, he showed his sketches of butterflies and was allowed to move on.  What was not recognized was that B-P had hidden in the sketches of butterflies tiny but detailed sketches of gun emplacements.

B-P’s cleverness and resourcefulness were among his greatest attributes.  Those skills, and the adventures that they draw from, formed much of the inspiration for the game we play today:  Scouting.

Implementation:
The camporee will start with an OA callout ceremony on the evening of May 6.  The camporee activities—using the spy theme—will take place during the late evening and through the early morning hour of May 7.

Preparation:
Leaders:  There are many terrific scout skills and new activities built into the activities for the camporee.  Many of them will challenge older scouts and intrigue your new scouts.  There are great troop and patrol activities in the activities that will help Scouts learn new skills and review old skills.  Maximum success – and fun – at the camporee will be had by those who review the materials in advance and try some of the activities out.

Program Staff:  There are complete sets of materials to help staff members implement the activities.  Some of the activities will require staff members to bring a few odds and ends for the activity to run well.  Please take a look at the staff guide and see what you and your fellow troop leaders might want to help with.  All are guaranteed to be fun and a new adventure.  Everything is more interesting….after dark.
