There is no cost for adults hiking with the Scouts.

Tell Me About It:

Orienteering is a fun day of hiking and competition for Scouts, parents, and adult leaders.

At the Forest Preserve, each team of 2-6 Scouts will get a map to review before the race starts. The map shows the location of 20 orange and white orienteering control flags scattered throughout the forest preserve.  The Scouts will look over the map and plan a strategy to find the most flags and score the maximum point total possible in 2 hours!  At each control flag, a pin punch is used to mark the team's scorecard to prove they were there.  It's a fast treasure hunt!  A compass is useful to orient yourself and the map, but often you can simply navigate using the features marked on the map, just as you would use a street map.

  • Map and Compass belt loop    Cub Scouts can satisfy several requirements toward earning the Map and Compass Belt Loop and Pin.
  • Orienteering Merit Badge     Boy Scouts will be able to complete several requirements toward the Orienteering Merit Badge.
